Before Facial Microdermabrasion

The doctor will examine the patient's condition before doing microdermabrasion. Tell your doctor about your history of allergies due to the use of certain face care products, if any. One week before the procedure, the doctor will usually ask the patient to stay away from sun exposure, not to do waxing or other measures to pull hair on the face, and stop using sunscreen, cream for exfoliation, and facial masks. Patients are also advised to clean their face and not use makeup before performing the procedure.

Facial Microdermabrasion Procedure

The patient will be asked to lean comfortably in a chair. Facial microdermabrasion is done without anesthesia or medication to numb facial skin. The doctor will use a device that can spray micro crystals into the outermost layer of facial skin (epidermis). The crystal beads will erode and lift up the epidermal layer of the skin, thereby stimulating the growth of new skin cells. This method is called crystal microdermabrasion. In addition to crystal microdermabrasion, facial microdermabrasion can be done by:
  • Diamond-tip handpiece. The doctor will use a stick-shaped device that can suck, with the tip containing micro crystals. When this tool is rubbed into the facial skin, dead skin cells will be peeled off and sucked by the tool. The depth of the peeled skin depends on the rubbing of the tool and how long the suction is done. This tool is generally applied to areas of the face that are difficult to reach and sensitive, such as the skin around the eyes.
  • Hydradermabrasion. This is the latest facial microdermabrasion method, which applies a crystal-free skin exfoliation tool.
When doing facial microdermabrasion, the patient will feel a light scratching on the facial skin. Facial microdermabrasion procedures generally last for 30 minutes to 1 hour. The doctor can advise the patient to have an advanced facial microdermabrasion session to get better results. Usually it takes 5-16 sessions of facial microdermabrasion to produce smoother, radiant skin.

After Facial Microdermabrasion

Patients will be allowed to go home and resume activities as usual after undergoing facial microdermabrasion. For several weeks, the patient will feel the skin becoming more sensitive than usual, especially when exposed to sunlight. Therefore, the use of sunscreen is highly recommended if the patient wants to do outdoor activities. Choose and use facial care products that make facial skin moist, and avoid the use of acne removal medications after undergoing this procedure.
